July 5, 1946: French designer Louis Reard shocked the fashion world by introducing the first modern bikini, naming it after Bikini Atoll to predict its explosive cultural impact. The tiny newspaper print swimwear used just 30 sq inches of fabric and exposed the navel, a major social taboo. 1412×2000

On 19 May 1845, Sir John Franklin and his men (24 officers and 110 men) sailed two modern vessels, the Erebus and the Terror, on an expedition to discover the Northwest Passage. Essentially what would become the main transit route for trade between Europe and Asia. They didn’t make it. [2507×1629]

The only known meeting to have occurred between Mustafa Kemal ‘Ataturk,’ the founder of modern Turkey, & US army Chief of Staff general Douglas Macarthur, (both top left) 1932. Macarthur would outlive Ataturk, who died from complications of alcoholism in 1938, by almost 26 years. (1029×768)
