An Inuk mother with her child in the community of Padlei (in modern Nunavut), circa 1950. The remote Inuit community was heavily affected by the 1950 Caribou Inuit famine, which was caused by a change in the migratory behavior of their primary food source. Approx. 60 people died. [600 x 889]

“The Vulture and the Little Girl” – Kevin Carter won the Pulitzer for this photo and took his own life four months later. The child, long believed to be a girl, was actually a boy named Kong Nyong, who survived the famine and died in 2007- (Sudan Mar/1993) 1500 × 783
